अंग्रेजों के अत्याचारों और अमानवीय व्यवहारों से त्रस्त भारतीय जनता एकजुट हो इससे छुटकारा पाने हेतु कृतसंकल्प हो गई। सुभाषचंद्र बोस, भगतसिंह, चंद्रशेखर आजाद ने क्रांति की आग फैलाई और अपने प्राणों की आहुति दी। तत्पश्चात सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल, गांधीजी, नेहरूजी ने सत्य, अहिंसा और बिना हथियारों की लड़ाई लड़ी। सत्याग्रह आंदोलन किए, लाठियां खाईं, कई बार जेल गए और अंग्रेजों को हमारा देश छोड़कर जाने पर मजबूर कर दिया। इस तरह 15 अगस्त 1947 का दिन हमारे लिए 'स्वर्णिम दिन' बना। हम, हमारा देश स्वतंत्र हो गए।   यह दिन 1947 से आज तक हम बड़े उत्साह और प्रसन्नता के साथ मनाते चले आ रहे हैं। इस दिन सभी विद्यालयों, सरकारी कार्यालयों पर राष्ट्रीय ध्वज फहराया जाता है, राष्ट्रगीत गाया जाता है और इन सभी महापुरुषों, शहीदों को श्रद्धांजल‍ि दी जाती है जिन्होंने स्वतंत्रता हेतु प्रयत्न किए। मिठाइयां बांटी जाती हैं
